4.22 Love Day

Kaity apologised profusely to her siblings and mother all week. The incident was almost forgotton, and Kaity had chosen to pretend it never happened.

As she'd promised, the family visited the festival the following weekend. Not wanting to abandon all the kids with Shaena, but needing to talk to Winter, Kaity suggested they take Autumn and Elise to look around the rest of the park.

And so Shaena stayed with Joshua and the twins in the little playground area while they wandered off.

Placing the children on the grass, they were drawn to a pair of towering machines, eighteen bulbs flashing up the sides, and a giant illuminated heart on top.

The sign, upon closer inspection, read "Love Tester", and there was a little story about how the ghost of ol' Grampa Simpson haunted it and would be able to tell you whether you were in love. The looked to each other, before wordlessly placing their hands on the handle as instructed.

Hopeful, even though it was a stupid gimmick, Kaity placed a five simoleon note into the slot, and pleaded the machine to light up the top end. Winter didn't seem to care, but was happy to see her smiling. She'd not smiled much since last weekends episode, and she'd refused to speak about it since their 'conversation' after.

A squeal made him jump back, but he laughed as soon as he realised it was Kaity excited by the results of the machine. "Burning" had illuminated, and judging by how high up the list that was, it was good.

Kaity threw her arms around him, and he returned the hug. This was the closest they'd been for a while, and Winter could see Kaity's whole demeanor had changed.
"Would you let me take you to dinner tonight?" He asked. Kaity didnt want to let go, but the shock of his words made her stand back.
"A... Like a... Well, like a date?"
"Yes. Exactly like a date." Kaity was completely blown. She'd thought it would be years before this stage, and yet here he was, infront of her, with a smile on his face, asking her on a date.
"Uhm... Ok." She smiled to reassure him that she did actually want this, despite her reaction, but Winter already knew that from how she acted when the stupid machine told them they were meant to be.

_____

They'd agreed to meet at a swanky diner in town that Kaity had never been to before. She arrived early and looked at the menu posted at the entrance. Pricey... I hope he's rich because I forgot my purse. It had just started to rain, and she started wondering if she should have bought a jacket from the look of the clouds.

She suddenly felt nervous when she saw him approaching. She had wanted to run out and buy a new dress because all the ones she had were too short for this place, she hoped she looked ok, she hadn't had time, and was really nervous about someone seeing her out in something she'd already worn.

"Sorry, am I late?" He smiled, stopping infront of her.
"No, it's ok." She smiled back, she'd got here a lot earlier than agreed, to scope out the area for press, she just hoped none would show up while they were eating.
"I love your dress, you look beautiful." Winter commented, as if he'd just read her mind. He leaned in and pecked her cheek, and she felt sick suddenly.
"Thank you, you do too." She wasn't used to compliments, and the whole thing just felt awkward. Winter led her inside with a hand on the small of her back, and a host showed them to a table. The place was empty, but that's what you get for dining at early-bird hours in an upmarket establishment.

"So." Winter smiled and reached for her hand once their orders had been taken.
"So..." Kaity smiled back, trying hard to bite back the wave of nervous laughter.
"Why are you so nervous?" This just embarrassed Kaity, she'd almost forgotton he could read her emotions like the pink neon sign on the wall beside her.

She laughed nervously, and attempted to tame a stray curl. "I don't know. I guess I see this as a test I need to pass, and I don't want to mess it up."
"What do you mean by 'test'?"
"Well, like... You know, you're testing me. You told me a few months ago that you couldn't trust me and you had to get to know me to see if you could trust me. So, this is a test, to see if I accidentally slept with some guy when you were at work, isn't it?" Kaity saw the expression in his eyes, either hurt or confusion, and pulled her hand away from his. Is he reading my mind or something? I don't get it, I've not done anything with anyone, not even him, since that damn conference, but he still can't trust me.

"It's not like that at all! I wanted to take you out for dinner, so that's what we're doing. No tests, no backwards questions about your past, just you, me, and now." Kaity sighed, and the couple were silent for a few moments.
"So, I'm supposed to believe that you suddenly trust me?"

She sat there, with a sour look on her face and waited for him to say something. Why am I doing this? Why can't I just be happy?!
"No. You're supposed to believe that over the past three months you've earnt my trust, and I want to take you out to prove that." He laced his fingers around hers, and her heart melted. She wiped a tear from her cheek, before pulling her hands away and covering her face. "Kaity, what's wrong? Do you want to go home?"

"No, just ignore me a minute." She called out from behind her hands, glad there was nobody else in the restaurant to see this.
"I'm not going to ignore you. I'm never going to ignore you." This only made Kaity cry more, and Winter really started to worry. "Are you sure you don't want me to take you home?"
"No! Dammit, Winter! Stop being so damn nice to me for once will you?" His soft chuckle made her look up from her hands, and she couldn't help but smile at how silly her outburst must've sounded.

He took her hands gently, making Kaity blush a little.
"No. I like being nice to you." He protested, before leaning down and kissing her fingers. "And you like me being nice to you. Secretly."
"No, I don't! Well, maybe a little, but then I feel bad because all you get back off me is a screaming, shouting, crying mess."
"I'm only in it for the screaming, shouting, crying messes." Winter smiled, kissing her hands again, and making Kaity smile. "See, that's why I'm in it. That smile. You should smile more often."
"You're such an embarassing cliche sometimes." This made both of them giggle.
"And you're truthful. You say what you really think rather than what people want to hear."
"You took me on a date because I'm truthful?"
"Well, the fact that you're beautiful helps. And your reaction to that love tester."

She pulled her hand away and propped her head up. She cocked an eyebrow while she tried not to laugh.
"Don't. Please, just forget about that. The twins already told me off for making too much noise, I don't need you to rub in my stupidity anymore."
"What's stupid about being happy?" He asked.
"Well, nothing, but..." Kaity couldn't hold it in anymore, and burst out laughing. "The look on your face. You looked terrified, it was so funny."

"How do you expect me to react when you scream right in my ear? I was really worried about you."
"It was a happy scream."
"I know, but since that night I will always worry about you." Kaity knew exactly which night he was referring to; the night Bonnie died.
"Don't." She stated. "Don't worry about me. In a few weeks he'll be gone forever."
"Do you want me to come to court with you on Monday?" Kaity shook her head.
"I just want to go there, tell the world what he did, and speak up for Bonnie and Shaena. And if he's there, I'll look him dead in the eye the entire time, and pray to the maker that he'll never see the light of day again."

"You don't have to do that. You know that you can give a statement without him in the room."
"I want him in the room. I want him to see me, and know that he didn't win." Winter stayed silent for a moment, thoughtful.
"You know that you don't have to prove anything. It might be more difficult than you think to stand up in court and see him."

"Winter. I'm a big girl. I know what I'm doing."
"Ok, just know that if you change your mind you don't have to do anything in front of him." Kaity nodded, and the food arrived, changing the subject for them.

After the plates had been cleared, Kaity nervously tucked her hair behind her ear again.
"Uh, Winter? I forgot my purse." Winter burst out laughing. "What?!"
"I like your style. Pretend you think you're going to split the bill, and then conveniently remember you have no money on you until after you've eaten." Kaity's mouth fell open, not sure whether he was joking, until he winked and got his wallet out. "Don't worry, I was going to pay anyway."
"You're such a llama." She smiled quietly, making sure she was loud enough for him to hear, before tearing some leaves off the topiary on the table, and playfully throwing them at him.

Moments later, they were outside in the pouring rain.
"Thank you for my dinner, Mr Snow." Kaity said in her most upper-class voice, to match the restaurant they'd just left.
"It's quite alright, Miss Mattell." Winter grinned, wrapping an arm around Kaity's shoulder. "Did you want to borrow my jacket?"
"No, you're the cold-blooded one, I can handle a little rain." Once they'd stepped out from under the canopy, Kaity had second thoughts. "Wow... It really is raining. Maybe I should have driven. Do you want me to ring Shae?"
"Kaity, you've left Shaena with five children, and it's nearly their bedtimes, she can't load them all into the car and come and pick us up, it's not fair."
"She won't mind, and then we'll be there to help put them to bed anyway." She'd already started getting her phone out.
"No." Winter said firmly, taking the phone from her and putting it in his pocket. "The kids won't sleep if they have the excitement of a car ride so late at night."

And so they walked home. Slowly. Neither of them even really noticing the rain, they were on a high.

They avoided walking through the park, because it would have been quicker. The dark clouds made it look later than it was, but the sun hadnt even set as they walked further inland away from the restaurant.

They made it to outside the museum when Winter bought up the subject.
"Do you want to talk about your father?"
"No. I don't even want to think about him... Her."
"I'd like to understand, and you shouldn't bottle your emotions up."
"Just drop it, Winter. I don't want to think about it, you don't want to know about it-"
"I do want to know about it." He protested.
"Just no. Please, pretend it never happened." She begged.

Kaity had refused to speak for a while, but by the time they got to the theatre in Mirabello plaza, she'd turned to whispering dirty things in his ear, and neither of them noticed the werewolf dressed in the latest homeless-chic watching them.

She pounced on him as soon as they got to her house, throwing herself into his arms so he had to hold her up. It was the first kiss they'd shared since the day he returned from Bridgeport, she'd been waiting a long time.

"You must be getting cold. How about you come inside and let me warm you up?" She winked. Winter smiled, before gently placing her on the ground in front of him.
"Maybe another time."

Kaity sighed and wrapped her arms around his neck.
"You know you don't have to play the gentleman. If a girl invites you inside, you go in because you've scored." Winter chuckled a little.
"I know what you're saying, but I'm not going to come in." Kaity pulled back and pouted.
"Why?"

"We're taking things slow, remember?"
"It's been a year since we did anything, Winter. Is that not slow enough?"
"Not quite." He leaned in and kissed her softly, before handing her phone back, telling her goodnight and leaving.

Restaurant used is 'Bridgeport downtown restaurant' by Black Zekrom I was feeling lazy, so just stole someone elses ;)

  1. Aw, such a nice sweet date.
I love how Kaity just keeps questioning everything and can't just be happy. That would drive a lot of guys crazy, but Winter handles it well.
I love how she got so much validation from the love tester, lol.

    1. Thank you! :)
Yes, she definately has some crazy paranoia issues. Luckily Winter always seems to know just what to say to calm her down.

Haha, I'd been planning a date at some point, but wasn't sure how to get to that point. Then, when I played through the love day festival, they did that really cute screaming and clapping thing, and I realised that could be the gateway. N'aawwww :) They're so cute together, I don't want the generation to end... but... I need to speed things up, really.
      /ramble...
Yes, Kaity is the kind of person who takes silly little things like that and turns it into a big deal, even though she knew that it really meant nothing.

  2. Such a romantic date! She'd better not mess this up! He so clearly loves her and has all the patience that's required to be in a relationship with her.

Can he read her mind or is it that he feels such a deep connection to her that he can sense her emotions? Either way, he seems like he's just what she needs! She's worrying about him trusting her, but I agree with Yang, she's the one who really has the trust issues.

They seem to really complement each other! He's more serious and settled and Kaity is flamboyant and emotional. She does speak her mind, and I think he loves her spirit.

Sorry for rambling! Great update, Gemma!

    1. Thank you! I don't see myself as a great romantic writer, violence and arguments come a lot easier, so it's lovely to hear you say that! :) Especially after reading Alissa (Well, I'm nearly halfway now, but there's been some romance amongst all that drama!)
I hope she won't mess it up, either, but as you said, Winter has all the patience he needs to be with her, so hopefully the silly little things she does will be overlooked (just don't go out kissing people again, Kaity!)

Uhm, no. It's that confusing thing with the markings she has giving off her emotions. Most people are affected in the way that they then feel how she does (so, if she's angry with someone, they'll get angry too. If she's sad, they'll get sad too), but Winter can tell that the emotions are coming from her (partly because he has his own markings, and partly because he's super-clever). They do feel a special connection, though, and yes, he is just what she needs. She does have trust issues, Winter is working through them (In a secret undercover training mission, lol!), but trying to do it so Kaity doesn't think he's messing with her head, if that makes sense?

Yes, they're almost total opposites, blue and pink, cold and hot, calm and crazy, but they work well together. Kaity has a lot of panicky/worrying moments, and Winter knows how to calm them.

It's fine! Ramble on! :) Thank you! :D

  3. Aw, I'm glad Kaity apologized after she cooled off.

And what a perfect lead-in for Winter to ask Kaity on a date, Yay! Her reaction to the love tester results was so cute, I bet he just couldn't resist moving forward a little with her at that point <3 So cute too, her nervousness over the date. I love it. I can understand her feeling that the date was a test, though.

"And you like me being nice to you. Secretly." ::giggle::

Walking slowly, taking the long way home through the rain is so romantic! But I'm betting a pappi is about to pop up from somewhere.

Hehe, but she didn't tell him about her orange panties :D

    1. Oh course she did. She knew she was in the wrong, even as she was throwing her fit, but she can't help but overreact.

Hehe, yep! And yes! She was like a school girl! :p I think he was planning on asking her to dinner at some point soon anyway, but that was the perfect lead-in, as you said.
Yes, she's so terrified that she'll mess this up! Bless her. She's never gone on a date before, she has no idea how to act apart from what she's seen on TV. Yes, it's just like Kaity to get all paranoid about Winter doing some kind of weird test on her! :p

      Hehe, she totally does ;)

Yes, it was so cute (but a bastard to shoot!), and yes, the paparazzi are always lurking. Probably their own fault for walking back though the centre of town.

Haha! That'll be a surprise for another time ;) Maybe things would have turned out differently if she'd told him about them? Probably not... :p

  4. The Ghost of Ol' Grandpa Simpson? Really? Abe Simpson can tell if you're in love? Bwahahahahaha! That's awesome!

Lol at Kaity forgetting her purse. That's totally something she would do. I mean, she forgot to pack a shirt to the conference also. lol

So, Winter Compliments her (You should smile more) and she turns around and tells him how embarrassing he is. Oh Kaity! And yes. That's totally the theme here "Oh Kaity."

*sigh! Winter is so sweet! Kaity, girl, you'd better realize just how good you've got it honey. *hugs for Winter.

    1. HAHA! SOMEONE GOT THE REFERENCE!!! :D
Yes, that came from a Simpsons episode. It was either a halloween one, or a valentines one. Or a mix of both, you know what they're like. I don't remember the details, but somehow Abe Simpson's ghost ends up inside a love tester machine in Mo's Tavern...

Anyway. Yes, Kaity is clumsy, and I decided I'd use that to mean she's a little scatterbrained at times too. She also forgets her purse in a later chapter, one I'm half done writing, but in her defense she leaves it in the car and then forgets her car... Ok, so she doesn't *forget* her car, but she doesn't take it with her... You'll see!

Haha, she has no idea how to take compliments, but it sounded like the kind of thing everyone says in the movies, and so she just said something to make him laugh rather than accept that she might have a nice smile.
"Oh Kaity!" is always the theme of your comments, these days ;)

He is, isn't he? Where's that damn 'make real' button when you need it?! If she doesn't realise soon, someone will have to point it out. I think she knows, though, hence being so nervous about messing it up.
Maybe Winter would hug you back... But, Kaity might get jealous of that at the moment. You know what she's like...
Have a hug from someone else? Alex, perhaps..? *dies laughing* He can't hug, too many chains in the way. :p

  5. Aww! Their date was adorable. Kaity's reaction to the love meter was hilarious. I also find it funny how she can't just shut up and be happy, and has to find something wrong with everything. Winter was incredibly sweet as usual. I can't wait to read about the court date. I'm sure there will be lots of drama in that chapter!

    1. Hehe, thank you!
Yes, that was what they autonomously acted like when the love tester beeped at them. I was originally just having they play around for some down time, but that was too cute not to use :)

Yea, she kinda gets verbal diarrea at the worst of times... I mean, she even wished she could shut up, but her mouth was working without her brain. Lucky Winter knows what to say, and loves her anyway :)

      Uh... Yeah... The court date...
Yeah, so I was too lazy to stage an entire murder trial, so I've sort of done a bonus chapter where the papers tell us the result, and then we pick back up a month after this chapter when it's all over. There's drama in the two chapters I've written up, though! Happy drama, which is extremely weird for me. I need to find something depressing to happen before I go crazy! :p
Nah, I'll wait for the kids to get a little older, and then they can maybe get a word in. Silly Kaity has taken over the show a bit much this generation (I mean, 22 chapters soley about her?!)

  6. Awww, their first date, how sweet! Kaity being nervous was just too cute, she definitely cares about Winter, or she wouldn't be so nervous! I love how Winter takes her craziness all in stride though, and loves her, despite herself, lol

I also thought her comment, "It's been a year since we did anything, isn't that slow enough?" was funny. Kaity's version of slow is much faster than Winter's!

    Great chapter Gemma! =)

    1. Hehe :D I thought it was nice to see Kaity nervous for once. She's usually so brave and in your face, and now we can see how insecure she really can be when she gets all emotional.
Hehe, yeah, Winter is some kind of saint for putting up with her sometimes. I think I'd have punched her in the face by now, I don't have his patience. Kaity definately loves Winter just as much as he loves her, but she probably won't say anything like that for a loooong time.

Haha! :p Kaity is used to one night stands, so waiting a year for a proper kiss seems so foreign. Winter has had relationships before, and while they've already slept together, he wants to do the whole taking it slow thing. He's been in town nearly three months now (+9 months of pregnancy to make the year), and the main reason he's saying no is because Alex's trial is just around the corner and he doesn't want Kaity to use him as a coping mechanism.

      Thank you! :D

  7. I am SO SO SO SO glad that Winter asked her out! I so totally squeed when he did that. I just love it. She was such a nervous wreck the whole time too! 'Stop being so damn nice' LOL And the walk home in the rain. /happy sigh

I don't think she's going to have as easy a time as she thinks she will when up on the stand against that slimeball.

    1. Hehe, I knew you would be, you're such a romantic :)
Yes, Kaity isn't used to someone being nice to her all the time, but I guess she'll have to get used to it :)

Well, I kinda skip over that (I'm just doing an article and we're picking back up in a month the day the trial finishes. I didn't feel like taking yet more time out to stage a trial, as I've already done the conference) but we can imagine that she doesn't feel too great about having to face the guy who beat up her best friend, murdered her other friend and attempted to kill her too. But she does it, and everyone is very thankful for it. There's no way Shaena would have been able to do it.

  8. Winter really is such a saint. Kaity needs to calm down! I'm hoping he balances her out a lot. I feel bad for Shaena, stuck at home with five kids. :p

To be fair, Winter is moving reaaaaaaally slow. :p

    1. He is, isn't he? Haha! Kaity will never calm down! Well, she will a bit, Winter has a way of settling her a bit. Shaena doesn't mind, she loves the kids and they take her mind off the looming trial.

Haha! He isn't moving that slow! He only came back three months ago, it's just been a year since the conference, which is what Kaity was playing off. Three months since she kissed someone else is actually pretty fast if you think about it.

  9. D'aww. Winter and Kaity 5ever! They are seriously so cute together and I love that Winter is able to temper her a bit, and like you said, calm her down when one of her moods strikes. Kaity is one lucky gal.

Their date was so sweet and romantic. I love their slow walk home and how they chose to take the long way to spend more time together; I also love that Winter is hellbent on moving things slowly. It shows that he really cares about her [and their relationship] and wants to be sure that they are doing it right this time. <3

    1. Hehe! I do love them together. I don't want to move on, but I need to speed this generation up a bit before we all forget Autumn exists. :p Kaity is very lucky to find someone that can handle her, she can be a handful at times, and she needs Winter to keep her grounded.

      Thank you! :D
Yeah, I thought it was cute that they took the long way. And yes, Winter wants to be sure that they're both in the right place to move things along. With Alex's trial literally around the corner, he doesn't want her using sex as an escape, so wants to wait for that to be over at least.
